Ensayista británico. Estudió para ser religioso; sin embargo, para salir de la pobreza, se convirtió en cambio en un prolífico crítico, ensayista y conferencista. Comenzó colaborando en periódicos, principalmente en The Morning Chronicle, y aportando textos para recopilaciones de ensayos, como The Round Table [La mesa redonda] (1817). Sus conferencias académicas fueron publicadas en dos volúmenes: Los poetas ingleses (1818) y Los escritores cómicos ingleses (1819). Muchos de sus ensayos más brillantes aparecen en sus dos libros más conocidos, Table Talk [Conversación de sobremesa] (1821) y The Plain Speaker [El conversador llano] (1826). The Spirit of the Age [El espíritu de la época] (1825) es otra muestra de su prosa prodigiosa. Algunos de sus mejores ensayos están publicados en español con el título El espíritu de las obligaciones y otros ensayos.
